Conflicting values in Voge service manuals

Checking the service guides on this site against Voge's owner's and workshop manuals turned up torques, capacities and intervals with up to four different answers. This article shows examples, with the page each one comes from, and how I handle them on this site.

Every torque, capacity and interval on this site has to match an official manual, and the page has to say which document and page it came from. I recently checked every service guide against all the PDFs we host for each bike, which means owner's manuals in English, Swedish and Hungarian and Loncin's engine and chassis workshop manuals.

The check found more than a hundred items where two of these documents, or two places in the same document, give different values. The DS900X documents, for example, give four different service schedules. The guides now list every answer with its page and say that we cannot verify which is correct. I know that makes a guide less useful when all you wanted was the number.

If you work at Loncin or Voge, there is a request for you at the end of this article.

Examples of conflicting values

Everything below comes from documents published by Voge, Loncin or their importers and hosted on this site. The document name opens the PDF at that page.

Problems with the documents themselves

A few documents also have problems of their own. Some of the Hungarian owner's manuals are stamped as machine translated on every page. The Hungarian DS625X manual gives valve clearances that match the DS525X rather than the DS625X, and the Swedish SR1 ADV manual has the spec page of the standard SR1. Owners receive these documents with their bikes, so they are part of the comparison.

How this site handles them

Where the manuals give different values, the guides on this site show every value with its document and page, and say that we cannot verify which is correct. They will keep doing that until Loncin or Voge confirms the right value. The suggestions below are not official guidance.

If the manuals give different thread sizes, you can measure the thread. With oil, the level on the dipstick or sight glass matters more than the capacity figure, and the manuals checked for this site all say to check the level after filling. Fill to the lowest realistic figure, run the engine as the manual describes and top up to the mark.

Loncin writes the workshop manuals for service workers, and each one covers one engine or one chassis in detail, while the owner's manuals cover the whole bike for riders and are translated for each market. On a workshop value the workshop manual is the better starting point, but the workshop manuals contradict themselves as well, as the DS525X drain bolt shows. A value that appears only in a machine-translated manual is the least reliable.

For service intervals, the shorter one is the cautious choice, since changing the oil early only costs money and changing it late can cost an engine. The warranty is a separate matter. Ask your dealer which schedule they stamp your service book against, and get the answer in writing.

Do not average two torque values or guess between them. Ask your dealer which value they use and where it comes from.

How does a dealer know which value is correct?

Asking the dealer only moves the question. If an authorised Voge dealer works from the same manuals, the dealer has the same conflicting values to choose from. Only Loncin or Voge can say which value is correct, which is why the request at the end of this article asks them to confirm the values.

This will matter more once the warranty runs out

While a bike is under warranty, many owners have the dealer service it. Once the warranty ends, some will service the bike themselves or take it to an independent workshop, and both rely on the documents being correct.

For motorcycles, the EU's repair rules are part of type approval. Motorcycles sold in the EU are type-approved under Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, and its Article 57 requires manufacturers to give independent repairers unrestricted access to repair and maintenance information, including service handbooks and technical manuals. The access has to be through websites in a standardised format, on terms no worse than those for authorised dealers and repairers.

Being able to download a torque table does not help much when the same document gives two different values for the same bolt. Voge is still a young brand in Europe and the first DS900X bikes are only a couple of seasons old, so many of them are still under warranty. In a few years a lot of them will not be, and whoever works on them then will need one consistent set of values.

Voge needs to address this

The fix is a corrected set of values for each model from Voge or Loncin. Until that exists, every conflicting value we find goes on the relevant guide with its document and page. If you find one we have missed, send it in.
